General PC Maintenance & Troubleshooting

  [ back [1] ]

1. Remove all non-business related applications

Not all applications are written as well as they should be and can cause your computer to experience everything from sluggish behaviour to lockups and crashes. Even programs which are well written, but run in the background, such as programs running in the system tray (next to the clock in the bottom right hand corner) consume system resources such as memory and CPU. Even the fastest computer will slow down if you load it up with enough memory resident programs. Generally speaking, make your computer do less and it will run faster.

How to remove programs:

> Go to the START button
> Select SETTINGS
> Select CONTROL PANEL
> Select ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS
> then either select CHANGE/REMOVE or UNINSTALL depending on the version of windows you are running.

(NB. Check with your system administrator for a list of programs that you should be running)

Do not remove Anti-Virus Programs, Live Update, WINZIP, Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Internet Explorer or any Service Packs
