Software management karate – moves to protect yourself

[ What if the Software Cops Knock? ] [ Conduct a Rapid Software Audit ] [ Are all your fonts legal? ] [ Technology Procurement Outsourcing ]

The heat is definitely on software piracy. No business can afford potential $300,000 fines to ignore it. Now the BSAA have announced a 'get tough' campaign on anyone using illegal software – including fonts. Thankfully Adobe Systems have announced a 60 day font truce on fonts - a little breathing space for the printing, graphics and advertising industry who are hyperventilating with fear.

At neXus, we are getting calls from some very worried business owners, honest people who have every intention to be legal, but in battling issues like GST and demi-recession, don’t have the time or the cash to tackle the problem head on. They just want to get a handle on it all: a way to do a quick audit, some tools perhaps, some accurate information would certainly help, and certainly price breaks from the computer industry would be most welcome.

They (you perhaps) need some software management karate – a few quick decisive moves that will get you past this point and keep you from getting on the back foot ever again.

In this issue, with some help from our partners, we offer some practical advice on getting software management under control - for ever (hey, at neXus, we don’t believe in short term solutions).

What to do if the Software Cops knock on your door

You’re getting there, you’re almost compliant, and that freak you laid off last month has dobbed you into the software cops. And now they’re knocking on your door. What do you do? Martin O’Conner of Coudert Brothers discusses your legal rights and obligations.

How to conduct a rapid software audit

If you have more than a dozen or so computers, software auditing can be a costly and time-consuming nightmare. Adam McEgan, a veteran of many a software audit, discusses how to get one done quickly and effectively here.

Are you sure all your Fonts are legal?

Adobe Systems is cracking down on font piracy. But what is the copyright on fonts anyway? And is there a cheap way of becoming legal? Download a definative guide and check out our special offer courtesy of the Font Factory.

Technology Procurement Outsourcing - smart purchasing

Smart companies don’t buy their software (or hardware) from retailers, nor do they buy it directly from websites. Smart companies use technology procurement outsourcing to save money, save time, save frustration and obtain first class management processes along with the bargain.
